PRESIDENT'S COLUMN |
I love springtime. I feel genuine warmth in the sun these days as
snow retreats to the shadowed places. Cold has lost its winter grip
and the thawed earth smells of life again. It’s a time of fresh new
beginnings. The pussy willows attest to that reality. Birds
celebrate it with song. It’s no accident that God chose springtime
for His Son to be lifted up in our place to die, freeing us from the
icy death-grip of sin. With His resurrection He pronounced to all
creation His victory. He is King of Kings! We are freed. He has gone
to prepare a place for us, and is attending to that task as you are
reading these lines. Think of it; God’s Son is preparing a place for
you right now!
Following great victories in battle in times past, runners were
sent throughout the land announcing said victory to the king’s
subjects. The oppressor was defeated. The people were safe. There
was great celebration in the land. Today the declaration of Jesus’
victory is still unheard of by many and not understood by most. That
message still needs to be declared to the lost souls living around
us. That is still the steadfast purpose of Six Seasons Christian
Riders. This is why, as many of you are reading these lines, I will
be on the road once again on my first two-wheeled ministry trip of
2010.
Escaping northern Wisconsin in March will demand I latch onto a
sunny dry day above freezing and make the first four-hundred mile
dash as far as Des Moines, Iowa where I’ll most likely thaw my bones
in the hot shower of a Ma & Pa Motel. The next day should put me
into more reasonable riding weather in Arkansas or Oklahoma, the
exact route to be determined by weather patterns and the whim of the
moment. This is a search and rescue operation. I’ll be watching for
divine appointments – those people who God has foreordained me to
meet that require His touch - all along the way. Within the ride I
have scheduled meetings with individuals, with groups of Six Seasons
people, in churches, at secular rallies/events, and ministering to
pastors and with missionaries. I’ve given myself leeway in the
schedule that enables me to stay over in places I need to and move
on when I must.
While I’m on the road a change will take place at home for
Marilyn. Our youngest son, Judah, will be finishing high school.
I’ll be returning to a home in the early stages of ‘empty-nest’
syndrome. I’m not certain I like that idea. Does that mean
‘geezerdom’ has arrived? Perhaps I can settle for ‘Grampa-hood’? I
like that better. "Look out Grandkids. Whiskers flying in the wind –
here comes Grampa!"
I pray that we will all glorify God in all of the stages of our
lives, and that we will persevere together in the vision He has
given us for this ministry. Our preaching, teaching, praying,
giving, and riding are all offerings to God, which is our reasonable
service. "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of
God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." (Romans
12:1)
May God bless you.

*****************************************
2009 has been a unique year for Americans. Change in
government leadership with its accompanying legislation has affected
us all. Scale-downs became common in everything from salaries and
jobs to motorcycle rallies. While a number of motorcycle events were
cancelled due to economic uncertainty others carried on, albeit with
fewer participants. Soon into the year I discovered that people who
formerly had little interest in allowing God an active part in their
lives had begun giving credence to the spiritual. They wanted
answers. They also sought security, and finding none in man nor
government programs, they became willing to explore in God’s
direction. I was asked many times this season to pray for people who
would never have asked for it before. That act was a spiritual
beginning for some, while for others it became an active walk with
God as His children. I was very pleased to see some of our newer Six
Seasons members become active in ministering as they listened to,
counseled, and prayed with hurting people. We are making a
difference.
Roof Completed: In spite of the economy the new roof
installation was completed on our house and garage. While the
company installing our metal roof went bankrupt during the project,
another crew completed the task. Praise God, we no longer need to
put out buckets when it rains. Marilyn and I have always enjoyed
hearing the rain on our roof, but now it reminds us of God’s
provision rather than the seeps that leak. We thank all of you who
were part of God’s provision in this project. May He bless you for
your faithfulness.
Vehicle Repair/Replacement: 2009 proved to be the greatest
year for vehicle breakdown/maintenance that I have ever experienced.
While I don’t require new vehicles, I do need reliable ones. My
perhaps too-old pickup required major work while towing my
motorcycle to Texas this early spring. Then Marilyn’s car went south
(not worth fixing) in June and required replacing. A new-to-her used
‘95 Buick with fewer miles took it’s place. Breakdowns do have their
advantages, however – if you look for them. The Bible says "…that
all things work together for good to them that love God, to them
that are called according to His purpose."(Romans 8:28). This
proved to be true in the GM garage where the shop foreman and
mechanic stood with me for twenty uninterrupted minutes while I
connected the dots between what was going on in our country and the
world from the scriptures and related it to them personally. They
were attentive because they were afraid. General Motors was
bankrupt. They didn’t know whether they’d have jobs to come to in a
few weeks. It was an excellent time of ministry. While I thought I
was paying for vehicle repairs – God had other plans.
Teeth: On another note, our new dentist became my friend this
year. I had some extractions and root canals done (fun!), and Judah
needed braces along with four extractions to make room for his teeth
to move. Expensive stuff, but I did get to know our new dentist well
enough that we went riding on our Harleys together. He’s very
fearful over the direction our country is taking. Over lunch I was
able to answer many questions he had regarding our country’s heading
and the reasons behind it. Timing is everything, so while Judah and
I open our mouths for him to work, please pray that he opens his
heart to God and the understanding that comes with the Holy Spirit's
teaching.
Finances: Six Seasons is a ministry in the black because we
determined twenty years ago to work within what God brings in. Our
ministries’ operation is functional and efficient, with every dollar
being valued and utilized in the best of stewardship. We minister
very effectively in the areas God has called us. However, some of
our support has dropped off this year due to the recession. To
remain a viable ministry in an increasingly hurting and scared
world, we will require other funds to take up the slack where giving
has diminished.
Solution & Battle Plan: Engage the enemy by using the
tools that God has entrusted to you for this battle of souls. Listen
to the Holy Spirit. Be faithful to God’s calling and do what you are
able with what God has put upon your heart to do. We don’t wish to
add to anyone’s burden if you are in financial difficulties
yourself. That is not God’s way, nor ours. He is our provider. He
has never failed. This is His ministry. If you can support this work
please do so. If not, your prayers can free up the funds that are
needed. He knows where they are stored. God has not raised us up,
given us the ministry that He has, and prepared us for this hour to
have us diminish in the final sprint before Christ’s return.
These very times are what we’re here for. This is why I’m
eagerly looking forward to the ministering opportunities that 2010
will bring as more and more people seek answers trying to make sense
of life as it’s become. We are the bearers of the message the world
needs to hear: the gospel of Jesus Christ.
God bless you and your family in 2010!

TIGHTENING THE SHIP
(STAYING AFLOAT)
At the request of several pastors I recently addressed the
Biblical method of handling finances before their congregations. I
was astounded by the post-sermon comments. Several people stated
that was the first time that they had ever been taught about
finances from the Bible – other than when it regarded tithing.
Several, with tears in their eyes, said they only wished they had
been taught these principles earlier, while others were extremely
thankful and said they now knew what they could do with what they
still had control over. The most heartbreaking story came from a
couple who told me they had lost virtually all of their savings in
the Madoff scandal. This retired couple is now relegated to living
on little more than social security.
Whether it’s on the radio, television, or in the newspapers,
financial stress has dominated the news for the past several months.
While some disasters are in real time (if you’re already laid off),
most are still in the future, which means that most of us still have
some time to prepare for what lies ahead. The challenges coming as
the result of our government stimulating us to death are going to be
tremendous. So, what can we do financially to prepare our households
for what lies ahead?
First of all, it might be wise to find out how we got into this
mess in the first place. I’ll ignore corporate and governmental
greed and mismanagement for this article and concentrate on
individual households, because that’s where we live and that’s where
we affect preparations that will matter to our households. An
illustration might help:
A young couple gets married in 2004. They roll away in their old
jalopy on their affordable two-day honeymoon and are quite happy.
Being together, free of their parent’s jurisdiction, and on their
own is quite an adventure. Their apartment is small but comfortable.
Things couldn’t be better. But they soon come to miss those things
they had at their parents homes: the large screen TV, the barbecue
grill, the riding lawn mower, Mom’s washer and dryer (Laundromats
are a drag!), and fishing in Dad’s boat. They look at their parent’s
house and reliable car and say, "We need those things too." So they
begin working toward those goals. They can do it.
But in 2006 Grandma and Grandpa pay the newlyweds a visit in
their motorhome. They hear of the places they are traveling, see the
motorcycle in the trailer behind the motorhome, and say to one
another, "Let’s not wait. Let’s get those things now." Their
friendly banker agrees and in 2007 they purchase their first house.
Then in the spring of 2008 (the fish are biting) they begin making
payments on the boat, and later purchase a pickup truck to better
pull the boat. The camper for the pickup comes later that year. Oh
yes, …the plasma TV? It’s been on the wall for several months now –
an easy loan from the store. Instant gratification realized! And all
without the patience or years of work that was required of Mom & Dad
or Grandma & Grandpa. It all was working fairly well too, until the
fall of 2008. They are now in deep financial trouble. They have
become slaves to the things they thought they owned, with upside
down loans they cannot bail out of, and may soon be paupers back at
the starting gate, but without the old paid-for jalopy - and with
two children in tow.
Sadly this scenario is being played out, for real, in way too
many American’s lives. It occurred because we don’t know God’s
methods for handling money, or the history of usury. "My people
are destroyed for lack of knowledge." (Hosea 4:6)
God & Money
The Bible mentions money more than heaven and hell combined. It
must, therefore, either be an important issue – or a stumbling
block. Even in our current Christian community we can find two
extreme camps of belief regarding money. The first are Christians
who entertain the idea that there is something spiritual about being
poor. They shy away from having expensive or new items, oftentimes
feeling awkwardly guilty and unspiritual about ownership of such
things. This ideology stems from the first Christian vows of
poverty, which emerged in the Dark Ages springing out of Gnosticism,
which is the pagan philosophy that the spiritual world cannot be
tainted with physical pursuits (i.e. science, law, government, or
money). The exalted pinnacle of this belief led to the life of the
monk. The second is the reaction to this belief espoused in our
modern Prosperity Gospel, which came to the fore when Christians
discovered there was nothing necessarily wrong with having something
nice as long as it didn’t become your idol. However, many bypassed
this balance to the point where the acquisition of physical ‘things’
became the measure of one’s faith and level of spirituality. This
view destroyed many people’s faith when their ‘spiritual ship’
failed to come in. They lost sight of the fact that Jesus died for
our sins, not for our life enhancement.
Effective Christian living maintains a balance between these
extremes. Money and material possessions are tools to be used in
living out our lives before a fallen world in such a manner as to
reflect Christ, knowing very well that all we acquire on earth will
be left behind. (But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his
righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matt.
6:33) There is nothing evil about money. Too little and we
become non-functional in our world. The Bible clearly states "For
the love of money is the root of all evil…" (I Timothy 6:10 -
underline mine). Loving anything before God makes it an idol,
which is sin.
Debt & God’s Law
Usury began in Babylon around five thousand years ago when some
men, who we’d call bankers today, created credit out of thin air and
lent money to people for usury (interest). It quickly enslaved many
with a few becoming very rich during the process. When God gave man
the Torah, He included guidelines for the use of money. Man was
warned clearly "…the borrower is servant to the lender." (Prov.
22:7). He did not state that borrowing money was a sin, but
clearly warned of the possible consequences of too much debt. Any
loans between Israelites were not to be longer than seven years in
duration (Deut. 15:1). But, knowing man’s bent toward
disobedience, God provided the Year of Jubilee where once every
fifty years all debt was to be forgiven. This was to keep
generational debt from enslaving the people.
America & Debt
America remained a debt free nation for nearly one hundred and
fifty years without a national income tax. We simply didn’t spend
more than we took in. But then we borrowed to finance our first war
effort, and that began our national slide into indebtedness. America
was still the world’s largest creditor nation until less than twenty
years ago. Today we are the world’s largest debtor nation, addicted
to debt to keep functioning. That’s why our new president encouraged
America’s citizens to take on additional loans to jump-start our
economy. Incurring additional debt, we were told, was our patriotic
duty. That’s a far cry from the principles of our founding fathers.
Most citizens knew better than to try to spend their way out of debt
and, fortunately, began to balance their personal budgets. For some,
it was too late.
America, being founded upon Christian principles, based many of
her financial laws upon God’s Levitical laws, which included our
laws regarding bankruptcy. This law was devised to give a person a
fresh chance if he hopelessly botched his finances beyond reasonable
hope of reconciliation. It wasn’t designed to be an easy out for bad
decisions; we wouldn’t learn to change our ways if that was the
case. But with the review of just judges, a person could obtain a
fresh beginning. Many Americans are resorting to this extreme end to
erase a slate of bad habits. I pray that the hard lessons learned
result in truly new financial practices.
What Can You Do?
Don’t panic. "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear…"
(II Tim. 1:7). Being fearful will cloud your judgement. It
weakens your position to make rational decisions. Remember:
terrorism is based upon fear. Headlines trade in worst-case
scenarios and result in compromised freedoms to avoid a perceived
threat. Be proactive, not reactive. How?
Get out of debt ASAP. Sell what you don’t need to get what you
will need now. Our government’s printing of trillions of
dollars (creating money out of thin air) will result in runaway
inflation. Sell that mortgaged snowmobile that you don’t need, while
there is still a buyer willing to purchase, and payoff the car you
need to keep. If you’re a farmer or carpenter, purchase the pickup
truck you need for your work now. Truck prices are currently low due
to the recent high fuel prices, but will go up with inflation soon.
Transportation: I believe Americans are about to discover the
utilitarian aspects of motorcycling. Up until now it has been a
sport, and more recently has taken a bent toward a rich man’s hobby,
with some larger brands becoming status symbols. That will change.
While many will bail out of them, we know that they are efficient
commuters. There is a reason motorcycles are so common in Asia and
Europe. They save gas, wear and tear on the car or truck, and …it
puts a smile on your face when you ride it. That can be important
during hard times. Sunday drives can still be affordable on two
wheels. And don’t forget about your first love of two-wheeling: your
bicycle. It’s the cheapest mode of self-propulsion man has ever
invented. Whatever your personal transportation, get it into good
working order while you are able.
Food: How long since you’ve gardened? Ladies, revive those
canning skills. But you’d better have seed on hand (most is hybrid
today and cannot produce it’s own seed) and canning jars and lids.
Eating-in will become a popular necessity.
THINK! What will you need, or wish you had kept in the future.
You will need to recreate with your family, so don’t sell all of
your recreational items. Some of the best memories that your parents
or grandparents told coming out of the Great Depression were the
family times spent together. So if you live among lakes, keep that
boat, perhaps downsizing to a more efficient model if you need to.
Those fourteen-footers with 9.9 hp motors will run all summer on a
tank of gas. If push comes to shove (paddle?) you do know what those
oar locks are for? J Remember that the
fish don’t care what you’re fishing from. Neither do your children
or grandchildren.
Attitude: "Learn to be content in every situation." (Phil.
4:12)
Many people’s joy depends upon material possessions. It’s
especially an American thing. ‘Shop ‘til you drop’ will no longer be
an option. Learn to be content with what you have. It’s a state of
the heart. Let your joy come from God and praise Him for what you DO
have. Don’t concentrate on what you don’t have. ‘Keeping up with the
Jones’ will not be an option. Good riddance!
God’s Work: A magnificent spiritual harvest is right at
our doorstep. When Six Seasons began twenty-one years ago, it
was designed with this time in mind. That’s why we included
boats, canoes, horses, and bicycles in our mission statement. When
apocalyptic times neared we knew that our people would be prepared
to get the message of Jesus Christ out even if they had to ride
bicycles. This news is nothing new to those who have been trained by
and have ministered with us over the years. Don’t lose that
vision now.
Continue to support God’s work, as you are able. "Sacrifice
unto your Lord and pay your vows unto the Most High. Then you call
upon Me in your time of trouble, for I will come and rescue you,
because it will give Me honor." (Psalms 50:14-15) God has not
forgotten you; don’t forget His work. Let’s finish the race God
has put before us well.
Rest
When you have your house in order to the best of your ability,
rest. Remember Jesus own words to us: "Peace I leave with you, my
peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let
not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27)
He warned us that the time before His return would be like this,
so keep looking up. You have nothing to fear. The best is yet to
come!

CHANGING TIMES
2008 has been quite an
emotional roller coaster, hasn’t it? We watched as gas prices soared
to over $4 per gallon, observed the collapse of our major insurance
and banking industries, and scrutinized the tumble of the stock
market - all while enduring the last half of an unprecedented and
prolonged two-year presidential election. How’s your heart?
While I’m not going to deal in detail with cause/effect in this
article, CHANGE is coming to America. We voted for it.
- A brief historical perspective:
The world watched a young country, which it tagged the ‘Great
American Experiment’, write a Constitution like no other - based
upon God’s Ten Commandments, even daring to print God’s name on it’s
money, and welcome all in the world to come and join them regardless
of race or religion. That upstart nation had its challenges but,
when push came to shove, she prospered and her sons later returned
to their father’s native lands to rescue them during World War II.
Following victory, instead of annexing her vanquished foes, she
rebuilt them upon democratic principles and set them free. That was
something only a nation based upon Christian values would do. God
continued to bless America. While the rest of the world experienced
financial woes, famines, and epidemics accompanied by wars,
insurrections, and political upheavals for decades, America was
protected. Then America changed.
The Church that was so instrumental in her founding years lost
God’s vision – and it’s voice. The ‘salt of the earth’ spent more
time in the shaker than in the world. More funds were spent upon
buildings and programs than missions. The Body of Christ became
lukewarm. Misguided by the delusions of love and tolerance it failed
to effectively address societies’ slide into immorality and
debauchery. Society suffered for it. Without godly influence in her
affairs America began to drift. But God was patient.
He was tolerant when America banned her children from praying to
him in her public schools in 1963. He extended grace in 1973 when
she legalized abortion through Roe v. Wade to kill her innocent
helpless children in the womb. His mercy was extended when she
banned His Son’s name being invoked in public prayers at government
functions and in branches of the military by Christian chaplains
(2007). But there comes a time when God must act. That time came
when her citizens’ vote to keep marriage a relationship between one
man and one woman was challenged as unconstitutional by ungodly
judges (California). It was the same year (2008) The Princess Diana
Bible (by New Mexico-based Revision Studios) appeared declaring
homosexual ‘marriage’ preferable stating "it is better to be gay
than straight." Noting that the Body of Christ failed to even utter
a stutter over this news (it was church as normal in most
congregations; no pulpit address to the issue, no prayer vigils, no
calls to action) – God gave America and her silent Church a choice.
She voted for CHANGE.
CHANGE has begun. America will never be the same. All will be
affected to varying degrees. Three things we must remembered:
Number One: Keep your eyes upon God and not circumstances.
Regardless of what takes place around you, you need have no fear. A
thorough knowledge of the Bible will help you understand what God is
about. It will encourage you. He wrote specific scriptures down just
for our understanding in these very times. Don’t rely upon your
pastor to teach you. Learn these things personally. A personal
relationship with the Holy Spirit is required for your
understanding.
Number Two: Watch God’s timetable - Israel. God has put
hooks into the jaws of the nations of the world and all have a
fixation with Israel. They cannot shake loose the idea of either the
annihilation of Israel (Iran and the other Muslim nations of the
world) or have a fixation in fixing the problem (i.e. the USA’s
roadmap for peace). Both will lead their countries to ruin.
Remember: Jerusalem is God’s city, not man’s.
Number Three: God will use His faithful as a testimony.
The world has always watched Christians as they live, face troubles,
relate in their marriages, raise their children, and face calamities
and even death. They are watching to see if what we say is real.
When everything people have put their trust in (savings, jobs,
positions, homes) fails, they will observe that God’s children are
not living in fear. Our peace comes not from material holdings. Many
will come to faith because of the faith of the Faithful.
God’s work of redemption continues. Ministries based upon false
doctrines and promises of financial gain and material prosperity
will fail as their followers realize that they have been lied to.
Ministries faithful to God’s word presenting the truth of Christ’s
saving grace will see great spiritual fruit as people begin ‘looking
Up’ instead of toward their respective governments for help. This
will come about as people realize corrupt government is part of the
problem. I have already observed the beginnings of that ‘looking up’
in our ministry.
July - Miles City, Montana: in a motel lobby I had the
opportunity to totally ‘connect the dots’ for several couples from
Canada and the US, including the motel clerk, in a lengthy question
& answer conversation about the spiritual impact of the world
situation.
August – Marshall, Minnesota: I spent the good part of an
evening chatting with the son of an Iranian diplomat who is himself
being trained to fill that position after learning western ways in
America. Our conversation covered many topics, not the least of
which was what lead to our current world position and the possible
outcomes. He carefully voiced questions that he related to me he
dare not ask at home. I prayed that God would enlighten him and show
him His truth.
September – New Hampton, Iowa: As a group of Six Season
members gathered at a rally this fall a man joined us, unseen by me,
and sat behind me listening to our conversation. He ventured a
comment of his own stating, "I agree with some of what you said"…
and then went on to offer his own comments. He didn’t run or argue.
He had honest food for thought and took it home with him The Holy
Spirit will effectively take it from there. Many of you began your
trip to Christ through lesser conversations.
Our ministry is becoming more intense. God is opening new doors.
I pray that we will all be ready to live our faith and proclaim the
truth of Christ to those who are seeking. We have the answer; all
things point to our Messiah’s return.
CHANGE indeed. God is not in the least surprised. His faithful
will be prepared. It’s not a mistake that our Six Seasons motto is:
…‘In all seasons…prepared’.
